Francois Halard has been a lifelong fan of Carlo Mollino and his seductive allure. Mollino brought an incredible sensual intelligence to each project, from his furniture to his portraits. Something Halard found endlessly inspiring and often explored in his own photography. Last year, Halard was exploring a photography auction in Italy, when he came across this original Polaroid by Carlo Mollino. Sadly, the print had already been sold, but Halard took this photograph to share his amazing find with Oscar Humphries, another lifelong Mollino enthusiast. The photograph shows not only Mollino’s work, but also the reflection of Francois Halard. A metaphor, so to speak, for the influence of one photographer on the other.
Carlo Mollino (1905–1973) was an Italian designer, architect, and photographer known for his wide variety of iconic projects. Ranging from well-crafted chairs, and automobile designs to staged erotic portraits of women in his home studio, Mollino pursued aesthetic appeal in all aspects of his life. “Only when a work is not explainable other than in terms of itself can we say that we are in the presence of art,” he once explained.
